Neodymium magnets (NdFeB), commonly known as Rare Earth Magnets, are exceptionally strong magnets relative to their size, composed of an alloy of neodymium, iron, and boron. The name “rare earth” is a bit misleading; these elements aren’t actually that rare, but they are challenging and expensive to mine. The process of separating neodymium from other elements makes them economically “rare”. It is important to exercise caution when handling these magnets due to their remarkable strength, brittleness, and the potential for breakage/shattering. Careful handling is essential; these magnets should be kept away from pacemakers, credit cards, and sensitive electronic storage devices…and children!

Neodymium magnets exhibit sensitivity to heat, losing their magnetism if subjected to temperatures exceeding 85° Celsius (185° Fahrenheit). Additionally, they are prone to corrosion and can rust easily. Compared to traditional ‘refrigerator’ magnets, which are typically made of powdered ferrite (iron oxide) combined with ceramic, or a rubber/plastic binder, neodymium magnets are significantly stronger—approximately ten times stronger than ceramic magnets. Notably, Rare Earth Magnets maintain over 99% of their strength over a span of ten years, which is quite remarkable!

Some are weak, extremely brittle and flake easily.
