Purple Heart Chairs
Purple Heart dining room chairs (6 of them) showing the name of species and marquetry detail of the chair backs . . . all in the Autumn season. First, drawn by hand, most from actual branches right here on our property. Then onto the marquetry. Each chair back contains an average of 100 separate and individual pieces of wood, perfectly fitted to each other with zero gap, cut both by hand (fret saw with a 2/0 blade) or on my Excalibur scroll saw utilizing the “double bevel” technique. The shaded areas are created using hot sand to literally scorch the wood before each piece is inlaid into the “picture”. The background is made of shop-sawn Wenge veneer, the leaves and stems were made using both natural and dyed veneers.
